So, it is nearly the end of the baseball season.
Up until 5 days ago, the Dodgers had been leading their division, just ahead of the San Diego Padres by half a game. As the fates would have it, the Dodgers had to play a four game series with the Padres here in L.A.
Dodgers win the first game 3-1.
In an UGLY second game, the Padres shattered the Dodgers 11-2.
In the third game, the Padres continue the beating, winning 2-1, and taking first place in the division.
Which leads me to last night's game…
First inning: Padres are up first. They score. And again. And again. And again. Padres 4. Ouch! The Dodgers get one run.
Second: Home run! Dodgers 2.
Third: Home run! Two more score and the game is tied 4-4. We have a chance!
Fourth – Seventh: Nothing. Zip. Nadda. Even with bases loaded and nobody out in the sixth, we can't score. Painful!
Eighth: Padres get two more. Dammit! Dodgers get one. We need one more to tie, but the inning is over.
Ninth: Send out our best closing pitcher to keep them within reach. If we can just hold them, we only need one to tie and two to win in the bottom of the ninth. We can do it! We can do it!...
The stadium starts to empty.
Padres 9. Dodgers 5.
Ok. Let's get this over with. The Dodgers are up, and only True Blues are left in the stands. The Padres have there best closer on the mound and the fat lady is warming up her vocal cords.
First up: home run!
Second up: Home Run!
Third up: HOME RUN!
Fourth up: HOLY $#!% ANOTHER HOME RUN!
It has been forty years since ANY team has hit FOUR home runs back-to-back. Padres 9. Dodgers 9. The fans are running back in from the parking lot!
TENTH inning: Padres score. Everyone holds their breath, but that's all they get.
Dodgers are up. First man is walked. Nomar Garciaparra gets to the plate. He has been out for days with a pulled muscle and a bad knee. Takes a strike. Ball. Ball. Ball. Wait for it…. SMACK!
Oh Baby!!! HOME RUN!!!!!!!!
Padres 9, Dodgers 11, and the Dodgers are back on top of the division in what all agree, is the best game in decades!
